Seeing a Reflection of God’s Grace in Parenthood – Garrett Warfield
A friend from work asked me a great question. He asked, “Is there any Scripture that would tell me if my son knows that I love him?”
This was my response to him:
Yes, its the whole thing! Meaning, When your son and my son were born – they had little to no knowledge of anything. They had to learn what love was and the way that they learned love was when we relentlessly set our affections on them. We served them, we fed them, clothed them, washed them, changed them, played with them, learned who they were (Our wives know this much more than we do) and then…..then they smiled. They reached a point of understanding, enough to know that this person enjoys me….and I like it! They may not have known what it fully meant but they knew enough to respond to our love with a smile – a smile of delight.
This is exactly how God loves us. He sets his affections on us and then relentlessly pursues us….until we smile – until we delight in Him. He will separate our sins as far as the east is from the west (Ps. 103:12) in order that we no longer feel the burden of law, but instead experience the joy of his grace. We also don’t hold things against our sons because we love them. He loved us in that while we were still sinners (Rom. 5:8).
After the conversation he sent me a text that said,”Thanks again for the good talk – it was exactly was i was searching for and needed to hear.”
I responded, “I am committed to pray for you and your family that we may both worship the Lord together and enjoy the grace of his Son. I weep that you would go to Him.”
I praise God for this conversation. My hope in writing this is that you would taste his grace and also that God would put burden your heart to pray with me for this man’s heart and for his son and his wife. I pray that he would come to worship the only God of grace – Jesus Christ.

Church history tells us that infants were baptized for several hundred years, and in the Catholic and Lutheran churches today, infants are still baptized. I understand that for Christians, baptism replaced circumcision . Why do most mainstream Protestant churches not baptize infants today?

I think I am beginning to better understand what this verse means (Galatians 5:4) “Christ is become of no effect to you, whoever of you are justified by the law; you are fallen from grace.”But would you mind giving me your take on it and clarifying the “law”. I am seeing the story of the prodigal son and the “good” son as being who is being referred to here and unfortunately I wear his shoes more times than not……

Deuteronomy 12:28 seems to say we can earn favor and blessing with God through obedience. But our church teaches it is a free gift. How can I reconcile these two thoughts?
